In-Home Personal Care for Seniors

Nona’s Home Care is a licensed personal home care agency serving San Diego County and Orange County. Our personal care caregivers help seniors with bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting and moving safely, with patience and respect for privacy.

If you or a loved one is struggling with everyday activities, or a doctor has recommended personal care services, in-home personal care from Nona’s Home Care in San Diego and Orange County can help. Our trained caregivers provide hands-on support with daily routines like bathing, dressing and getting around the house, so seniors can stay safe, clean and comfortable in the home they love. Care is built around your loved one’s schedule and preferences, and it can start with just a few hours a week.

When Are In-Home Personal Care Services Needed?

If it’s unsafe, very difficult or no longer possible for a senior to manage everyday needs alone, in-home personal care for seniors is a good solution. Families often notice the signs gradually: skipped showers, the same clothes worn for days, a near fall in the bathroom, or a parent who is simply exhausted by daily routines. Common reasons families start personal care services include:

  • Dementia or Alzheimer’s. Some older adults are physically able to care for themselves, but memory loss keeps them from doing it safely. In-home personal care lets people with Alzheimer’s or dementia stay in their own environment while staying safe and healthy.
  • Recovering from injury or illness. Seniors often take longer to bounce back from an injury or illness, and personal care at home can smooth the path to recovery. Whether you need a week, a month or years of help, Nona’s personal care caregivers in San Diego and Orange County can support your loved one.
  • Struggling to keep up. Many older adults can still care for themselves, but it takes all their energy just to get through the day. Personal care services take on the tiring daily tasks so seniors can save their energy for what they enjoy.

What Do Personal Care Services Include?

Doctors, insurers and care teams measure the need for personal care with activities of daily living, or ADLs. Our in-home personal care aides help with each one, including bathing and showering, dressing and grooming (hair, shaving, oral care and nail filing), toileting and incontinence care, transferring in and out of bed, chairs and the car, and eating, from meal setup to cutting food and encouraging fluids. Long-term care insurance policies usually start paying when someone needs help with two or more ADLs, so we document the help we give to support your claim.

Personal Hygiene

Getting in and out of the shower or bath can be difficult or dangerous for an older adult with mobility challenges, and seniors with Alzheimer’s or dementia may forget to wash, brush their teeth or comb their hair. In-home personal care keeps seniors clean, groomed and well cared for every day.

Mobility and Fall Prevention

Falls are one of the greatest dangers for seniors, and fear of falling keeps many from doing the things they enjoy. Whether it’s moving around the house, a walk to the park or a drive to a favorite place, personal care caregivers help seniors get where they want to go safely.

Medication Reminders

Nona’s caregivers remind your parent to take medications on schedule, go along to appointments, and watch for changes in symptoms, so the family and care team know how your parent is doing. Caregivers give reminders only; they don’t set up or administer medications.

Chores and Errands

Personal care caregivers also handle the small tasks that add up over a day, from grocery shopping and picking up prescriptions to laundry, dishes and light housekeeping. Taking these chores and errands off a senior’s plate saves their energy for the activities they enjoy and can be a huge relief.

Bathing with dignity

Many seniors resist bathing because they’re cold, afraid of falling or embarrassed. Our San Diego personal care caregivers warm the bathroom, explain each step, keep your parent covered and let them do as much as they can themselves. If your parent prefers a caregiver of a certain gender, we’ll match accordingly. For more ideas, read what to do when an elderly parent refuses to bathe.

Personal care after surgery or a hospital stay
The first weeks home are when help with showering, dressing and getting to the bathroom matters most. Nona’s can often start in-home personal care the same day your parent comes home from the hospital, then reduce hours as they recover. Learn more about after-surgery care and after-hospital care.

How much does personal care cost?
In-home personal care in San Diego and Orange County costs $40 to $50 an hour at Nona’s, depending on the level of care. There are no deposits or weekly minimums. Around-the-clock personal care costs $850 to $1,100 a day. We help families use long-term care insurance benefits toward the cost.

Your monthly cost depends mostly on how many hours of personal care your loved one needs. A daily 2-hour morning visit for bathing, dressing and breakfast costs about $2,600 to $3,250 a month. Four hours a day, five days a week, runs about $3,460 to $4,330 a month. Where your loved one falls in the $40 to $50 range depends on the level of care, such as help with transfers, incontinence or dementia-related needs. We’ll recommend a schedule during your free consultation and adjust hours as needs change.

Frequently asked questions

What is personal care for seniors?
Personal care for seniors is hands-on help with activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, eating and moving safely. It’s non-medical, in-home personal care provided by trained caregivers, so it doesn’t include nursing tasks like injections or wound care. It helps seniors stay clean, comfortable and safe at home.

Can a caregiver help my parent shower?
Yes. Personal care caregivers help seniors shower or bathe safely, from setting up the bathroom and steadying them to washing and drying. They use shower chairs and grab bars when available, keep your parent covered and let them do as much as they can. Caregiver gender preferences can be accommodated.

Do caregivers help with incontinence?
Yes. Personal care includes help with toileting, changing incontinence products, skin cleansing and keeping linens clean. Caregivers handle this with discretion and respect. They can also watch for skin redness and let family know if something changes, so problems are caught early.

Can caregivers give medications?
Non-medical caregivers in California can remind your parent to take medications and bring them to them, but they can’t administer medications, set up pill organizers or give injections. If your parent needs medication administration, a nurse or home health agency handles that part. Read more about medication reminders vs. administration.
